The Sith was an ancient culture which was the first to study the Dark Side of the Force. It is said that the Sith clan believed that personal power was more important than anything else. The followers of the Sith trained their own apprentices in the ways of the Dark Side, much like the Jedi (It is debated whether the Sith or the Jedi originated this form of training).

It is said they formed small groups within the larger order in order to increase efficiency their teaching; others believe that this was caused by various power struggles. Each group had a leader who had risen to power in his particular clan. The leader of the clan was given the title of Dark Lord of the Sith. There was only one Dark Lord in each clan at one time. Many Dark Lords were chosen for leadership by the higher Sith Lords and many of them had to defeat their opponents to secure their position. Often, the losers would resort to violent acts in attempt to seize the title and claim revengeTo avoid the struggles for power in the original Sith clan, the clan now contained only two members, a master and an apprentice.
